SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA – The tuna industry is anxiously watching as potential tariffs loom. The Trump administration is considering a 20 percent tariff on all imported Mexican seafood, including tuna.
Americans eat more than 1.5 billion pounds of tuna each year, and most of it comes from Mexico. If the tariff goes into effect, it could drive up the cost of tuna by as much as $414 million per year.
The fishing industry in Mexico supports more than 300,000 jobs, and a tariff could devastate that industry. It could also lead to higher prices for consumers.
"A 20 percent tariff would be a body blow to our industry and would lead to significant job losses in both the United States and Mexico," said National Fisheries Institute spokesperson Gavin Gibbons.
Gibbons said the tariffs would also cause long-term damage to the seafood industry in both countries. He urged the Trump administration to reconsider its proposal.
The National Fisheries Institute is a trade group that represents seafood processors, distributors, and retailers in the United States.
